What we are doing
ARI has a long-standing history of delivering science to inform preparedness, response, recovery, and resilience actions in the face of emergency events. Our scientists provide expert advice, analysis and on-ground surveys to inform actions before, during and after environmental emergencies. As Victoria’s centre for applied environmental research, ARI has the unique position to leverage collective environmental datasets dating back to the 1970s in our research.
Our extensive ecological expertise in both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems is purposefully aligned to emergencies that impact on the natural environment. Our staff provide timely scientific advice to support decisions about managing the impacts of bushfires, floods, and disease outbreaks.
More recently, ARI has helped develop guidance to inform the inclusion of people and their relationships with nature in emergency recovery and resilience activities.
Context
Victoria’s natural environment has evolved over millennia to stochastic events. However, the impact of these events is changing rapidly. Climate change, fragmented and modified habitats and the changing distribution and abundance of native and introduced species since European colonisation are each contributing to greater risks posed by such events on our native species and ecosystems.
