What we are doing

Our science gives wildlife managers the information needed to manage and help recover threatened plants, animals, and ecosystems. We collaborate with partners across Victoria and Australia to understand, protect, and support the recovery of threatened species. Our research informs management actions by monitoring species populations, tracking ecosystem conditions, identifying options to reduce threats and support recovery efforts.

Context

In Victoria alone, over 2000 plants, animals, and ecological communities are at risk of extinction and are listed as threatened under the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988. Our native species are declining due to many threats, including:

  • Changing climate
  • Habitat loss and fragmentation
  • Weed invasion
  • Invasive grazers and predators
  • Modified river flows and fire regimes.

To manage these threats and support species recovery, governments, private landholders, and management agencies need trusted ecological knowledge to inform both policy and on-ground actions.
